Map of Ancient Roman Empire in AD 211


Historian Anthony Birley points out that 'Anglo-Saxons may not always grasp the complexity of ancient Roman society, in which there were, not only two languages of culture, Latin and Greek, but a variety of other tongues in common use.' This map shows the multitude of peoples that formed the Roman Empire, each speaking a different language.
