Behind the scenes at The National Archives

Take a Free tour and see behind the scenes of Britain's biggest archive

From Saturday 18th October The National Archives is launching free behind the scenes tours to show you the inner workings of Britain's biggest archive. Our tour will give you a thorough introduction to the work and collection of this important national resource.

On the tours you can: -
  • Learn how government documents are selected for preservation and why some are not!
  • Visit our bomb proof, climate controlled storage facilities with over 100 miles of shelving.
  • See the original Domesday book in our 'Treasury'.
  • Learn what preservation work goes into a thousand year old manuscript.
  • Visit our museum containing world famous documents.
  • Learn how to become a reader and access documents yourself, from medieval maps to MI5 Files!
  • Get advice on family and military history research and on dozens of other topics.
Tours last approximately two hours and start at 11.00am and 2pm.

Children are more than welcome if accompanied by an adult.
