Armed Forces Personnel Administration Agency (AFPAA)
The Armed Forces Personnel Administration Agency was launched on 1 April 1997. It pays salaries to Armed Forces personnel: pensions to former members and their dependants; delivers current and historic military medals (except gallantry awards); administers Armed Forces casualty and compassionate cases; and provides IT systems to the single Service personnel management organisation. The Agency is playing a leading role in introducing the Joint Personnel Administration programme, which will provide a modern IT package and new processes for personnel and pay administration across the Armed Forces during 2006.

Army Training and Recruiting Agency (ATRA)
Launched on 1 July 1997, the Army Training and Recruiting Agency (ATRA) aims to deliver the required number of appropriately trained and motivated individuals to meet the operational requirements of the Army and Defence. Under the Defence Training Review (DTR) Rationalisation Programme ATRA recently transferred some of its operating divisions to its sister Agencies in the Royal Navy and the Royal Air Force. At the same time ATRA assumed responsibility for individual training of RN and RAF personnel in certain specialisations.

Launched in July 1992 as the Defence Postal and Courier Service Agency, the agency was renamed as the British Forces Post Office in July 1999. The agency provides a global secure mail service to MOD, Service personnel and their dependants, authorised civilians and some other Government Departments.

Defence Estates (DE)
Defence Estates was re-launched on 1 April 2003, with a new mandate to deliver estate solutions to meet the Armed forces requirements for an estate of the right size and quality. On 1 April 2005 Defence Estates became a Top Level Budget, retaining its Agency status, and now sits alongside the Defence Logistics Organisation and Defence Procurement Agency as one of the acquisition organisations within the MOD budgetary structure. The role of Defence Estates is to provide and maintain the estate and its infrastructure, including families’ housing, specialist support to MOD on estate policy and the Sustainable Development in Government agenda.

Defence Vetting Agency (DVA)
The DVA was established on 1 April 1997 to modernise, and collocate, the work of the former single Service and MOD civilian vetting units. The DVA is responsible for the national security vetting of all MOD civilian and military staff, and defence contractors. It also does aspects of vetting work for certain other government departments on a repayment basis. It is the largest of the government's national security vetting authorities, undertaking around 58% of the total vetting business.
