Analysis

A paper: Observational Study on Diagnoses of 3233 Gulf Veterans who attended the MODs Medical Assessment Programme 1993-2004" has been published in the Journal of the Royal Naval Medical Service. The paper reviews all the diagnoses of 1990/1991 Gulf veterans made at the GVMAP and also reports on links between illness and service in the Gulf. The overall picture of veterans’ health at the time they were seen has not changed from that last reported in the "MAP 3000" paper (below): 75% were judged well at the time they were seen and that of those who were unwell, most illness was accounted for by a psychiatric disorder, most commonly Post Traumatic Stress Disorder. The review of links between illness and service in the Gulf shows that 3% of those seen had physical conditions (most commonly respiratory, digestive, injuries and skin disorders) linked to the Gulf.
