Network Enabled Capability

The Network Enabled Capability Team are responsible for the publication of JSP 777 whose aim is to a clear expression of what the United Kingdom means by Network Enabled Capability (NEC) in order to engender a much wider and more common understanding of its tenets not only within the UK's Ministry of Defence and Armed Forces, but also across Government, within Defence Industry and Academia, and with allies and coalition partners.

It also seeks to stimulate innovative thinking and debate on, as well as active and constructive engagement in, this pivotal change initiative in order to help guide and further progress the development of NEC. Nearly 10,000 hard copies of Edition 1 were put out on a very wide distribution across the Defence community in late January 2005. The NEC Handbook was endorsed by the Command and Battlespace Management Board in November 2004 and will be reviewed on an annual basis.

Document Description

The NEC Handbook is presented in 2 Parts:

  • Understanding NEC – Part 1 is designed to explain what we mean by NEC and highlight the benefits to be gained through the use of networks to share information and integrate and optimize military capabilities for employment in Effects Based Operations (EBO).
  • NEC Development – Part 2 describes how NEC will be developed over time. It identifies the strong governance of NEC within the Command and Battlespace Management (CBM) Programme and illustrates the progression through the NEC States towards the full transformation of military capability.
