Overview and policy priorities
The European Security and Defence Policy (ESDP) is part of the Common Foreign and Security Policy (CFSP), which is handled by the General Affairs and External Relations Council (GAERC). The UK Presidency of the EU will aim to make ESDP more active, more capable and more coherent. This means a focus on operations, on capabilities, and on the coordination of civil and military tools in crisis management. This will be underpinned by reinforcing the EU’s relationship with NATO and the UN. The UK Presidency will also focus on Africa by delivering EU support to the African Union in order to enhance its peacekeeping capabilities and to support its operations.
