Crown Copyright material
Copyright protects literary (written) and artistic material, music, films, sound recordings and broadcasts, including software and multimedia. Material created by government employees during the course of their duties is protected by a form of copyright called "Crown Copyright": however Crown Copyright works generally enjoy the same rights as ordinary copyright works.
Patented inventions and processes
Patents protect new inventions and new industrial processes. Over the years, the work of MoD scientists and engineers has resulted in a large portfolio of patents being granted in the name of the Secretary of State for Defence. The MoD is often willing to license firms who wish to manufacture these patented inventions, or use these patented processes. Please also click on this link for details about reproducing industrial designs.
Trademarks, crests and logos
Trade Mark law protects the identity of the provider of goods and services, allowing distinctions to be made between different undertakings. Trade marks do not necessarily need to be registered with the Patent Office in order to be protected, although many MoD trade marks are. In the context of the MoD, "trade marks" include all crests, heraldry, logos and other insignia used by the Armed Services and other MoD sections, together with their names, mottoes, and the names of any services they provide.
