Step 2:

List of MoD 'Added Value material' and 'Core information'

'ADDED VALUE MATERIAL'

The following material is regarded as "Added Value" material. A licence fee or royalty may well be charged for its reproduction.

Please note that the fact that an item is listed here should not be taken as a sign that the MoD is always willing to permit the reproduction of material meeting that description.

VAT will be added to any royalty payments due.

1) Badges / Crests / Logos / Trade Marks, and other insignia

These items embody the history and reputation of the units they represent, and as such their use is very tightly controlled. Unauthorised copying is regarded as a serious matter. Please see our section on licensing trademarks, names and logos.

2) Medals

The Directorate considers requests to licence manufacture of "miniatures" and full-size replicas of official British military medals.  For further details please contact the Directorate.

3) Photographs

This includes photographs made available by the On-Line Image Database, and other MoD archives. The following royalties are usually levied:

Where up to two photographs are to be used, a fee of £50 will be charged.

Where three or more photographs are to be reproduced in the same publication, the first two photographs will be £50: however, a fee of £50 per additional photograph will be charged.

Some MoD photographs have an exceptional degree of artistic merit. The commercialisation of such images (for example, use on a greetings card, picture calendar or poster), will attract a significantly higher fee or alternatively a royalty of 10% of income, with a minimum royalty of £50.  Please contact the Directorate to discuss your specific requirements.

4) Articles published in MoD-produced journals

Fees are usually charged at the following standard Government rates: 0 - 1,000 words - No charge ; 1,001 - 2,000 words - £60 ; 2,001 - 3,000 words - £120

5) Technical material

This includes manuals, technical drawings, computer code and data. For further details, please contact the Directorate.

6) Illustrations and other graphic works

Royalties are charged at the same rates as photographs.

7) Film or video clips

For a 10 year, non-exclusive, world-wide licence a fee of £60 per second is levied, with a 30 second minimum.  Other rates to meet specific needs are available, please contact the Directorate to discuss your requirements.

8) Charts and Maps

These items are handled in-house by the Hydrographic Office or the DGIA.

 'CORE INFORMATION'

If the material you wish to reproduce is not listed above, it is called "Core Information". This category covers most written material produced by the MOD during its day-to-day operations, unless protected by confidentiality, design or trade mark rights.

Permission to reproduce "Core Information" is dealt with by HMSO Licensing and not by the MOD. You should note that the reproduction of most core information is permitted without the need for a licence under the "Crown Copyright Waiver" scheme. For other material, HMSO Licensing operates a free, user-friendly, "Click-Use" licence system.
