Service Families Task Force (SFTF)

The Service Families Task Force (SFTF), created in 1998 to address the problems caused by Service families' mobility that were not within MOD's control, now deals with all family issues that are outside the scope of an individual Service.

It includes a Ministerial Families Forum where Service Families Federations present issues direct to Ministers and a Working Group of all interested parties that develops the Families Action Plan.

There are three elements to the Task Force:

  • The Families Forum - This provides an opportunity for Service Families Federations to raise issues, direct with Min(DPWV). Meetings are held twice a year and are attended by the chairs of the three Service Families Federations and Service representatives
  • Families Working Group (FWG) - The membership includes all interested parties, such as chairs of the three Service Families Federations, policy makers, Service representatives and other experts. The FWG meets twice a year and is the first point of contact outside of the single Services when matters require collective action or Central Staff action to resolve
  • MOD and Single Services - The teams in the Ministry of Defence and individual Services who carry out the day to day work to resolve issues

The Service Family Task Force does not deal with individual casework; information or advice is available from local welfare services, the HIVE, or via the Directgov website to find information from central and local government. Those having difficulties resolving an issue should contact Families Federations, single Service representatives or HIVE in the first instance.
