Safety, Sustainable Development and Continuity (SSDC)Division

The Division is responsible for developing MOD wide strategy, policy, rules and guidance on Health and Safety, Sustainable Development and Business Continuity.

Safety Team

The Safety Policy and Assurance Team is focussed on:

  • Producing and promulgating clear and simple policy to ensure compliance with relevant legislative requirements
  • Driving improvements in safety management and performance across Defence through engagement with stakeholders across the Dept, and support and advice to senior Boards and personnel

The Team's main responsibilities include:

  • Development of clear and simple policy, rules and guidance for occupational health and safety and radiation protection
  • Taking forward the wider recommendations from the Haddon-Cave Review
  • Developing and driving implementation of the strategic safety goals in the Defence Safety Strategy
  • Improving the IRIS incident reporting system to deliver the key strategic principles and meet stakeholder requirements
  • Reporting to and supporting senior Boards such as the Defence Board and the Defence Environment and Safety Board to ensure improvements in processes and behaviours are driven from the top

Sustainable Development Team

The Sustainable Development (SD) team is focussed on:

  • Compliance with environmental protection (EP) legislation and the Climate Change Act, as well as wider government targets for sustainability, and
  • Embedding sustainable behaviours throughout defence in order to enhance MOD’s compliance with SD/EP targets and legislation

The team’s main responsibilities include:

  • SD Strategy development and implementation, including the Climate Change, Waste and Travel strategies
  • Coordinating the action of the Key SD Policy Owners to meet government SD targets
  • EP policy and guidance in MOD and staffing government consultation on emerging legislation
  • Embedding SD throughout Defence business
  • Reporting SD performance internally and externally (Annual Report and government targets)

Business Continuity Team

The Business Continuity (BC) team works closely with other Government Departments and external partners to develop BCM good practice. The team sets out the Departmental policy which is then implemented by organisations throughout Defence.

The team’s main responsibilities include:

  • Ensuring a coherent and effective approach to Business Continuity Management (BCM) within the Ministry of Defence and the Armed Forces
  • JSP 503 (MOD Business Continuity Management)
  • Co-ordinating MOD's Pandemic Influenza planning
