Mission
To provide field deployable geographic support to Defence
Role
Operational Geographic Capability: The Geographic Engineer Group (GEG) provides formed bodies of geographic personnel and specialist equipment to meet Defence needs in the field for both UK based and overseas operation. These forces, which range from two-man teams to 100-man Royal Engineer squadrons, are held at short notice for rapid deployment.
Organic Geographic Capability: The GEG provides trained personnel and specialist equipment to be embedded in deployable headquarters (HQ) and other organisations across Defence on a permanent basis. It also provides technical and career management to these organic capabilities.
Trained Personnel: The GEG, through the Royal School of MilitarySurvey, provides specialist geographic training to all three Services, to MOD civil servants and to overseas students.
Professional Advice: The GEG provides a broad spectrum of specialist geographic advice across Defence.
See the related teams section for more details on the DGI business units and the related leaflets section for a map on how to find the GEG.
Staff
The GEG is commanded by a Colonel and is composed of three unit elements.
HQ GEG commands and directs the Group. It focuses on geographic capability development and policy, looking one to 10 years into the future. It also provides career and technical management support for geographic staff across Defence.
42 Engineer Regiment (Geographic) provides the bulk of the field deployable geographic capability to operations and routine support to HQ GEG and Royal School of Military Survey.
Royal School of Military Survey provides specialist geographic training to a wide UK Defence audience and to overseas students. It is the centre of excellence for geographic training for all three Services, with courses ranging from a full time 1 year Defence Geographic Information MSc to short courses covering skills such as map reading, navigation and Geographic InformationSystems (GIS) operation.
The majority of these assets are based at Hermitage in Berkshire, but the GEG also has sites in Surrey (Ewell) and in Germany (Monchengladbach).
