Access & Recreation

Tom Watson - Under Secretary of State for Defence & Minister for Veterans

As the Minister responsible for the Defence Estate I am delighted to welcome you to MoD’s Access and Recreation web pages. Here you will find:

general information about how you can access the MOD estate and where to find out more; and

a diversity of walking opportunities that exist on Defence land.

The MoD has an estate to enable our Armed Forces to learn and develop the skills that are essential if they are to meet their operational commitments at the highest professional standard. That said, we maintain a presumption in favour of public access unless there are operational or training requirements, safety or security limits.

I hope you enjoy looking at these web pages, and that it will inspire you to visit at least one part of our estate.

We are always interested to hear opinions on how we could do more, so please use the ‘Contacts’ section to let us have your views.

Walkers on MOD land

Introduction

The scenic qualities of the defence estate, its rich heritage and comparatively remote nature have created a valuable recreational facility that the public may use and enjoy. It is a particularly important resource for many local communities. In addition to walkers, the estate is used by the public for horse riding, cycling and other recreational activities.

Safe public enjoyment of the access opportunities provided across the defence estate requires responsible behaviour by both the MoD as estate managers and users, and the general public as visitors.

  • Please observe all signs and do not trespass.
  • Please respect the need for the Armed Forces to train for operations;
  • Respect the countryside and follow the relevant codes in England, Wales and Scotland.
