Nimrod MR Mk2 Review of Hot Air System

The Ministry of Defence commissioned this report in January 2008 in response to the Board of Inquiry report into the loss of Nimrod XV230 which recommended that a safety review of the Nimrod hot air system be completed. The mitigation measures currently in place for the operation of the hot air system in flight, together with the hot air ducts replacement programme will ensure we can continue to operate the Nimrod aircraft safely until its planned retirement from service.

Nimrod VX235 Flight Safety Investigation Report

Due to continuing public interest in Nimrod airworthiness, it has been decided that the final Flight Safety Investigation Report into the fuel leak that occurred on Nimrod MR2 XV235 on 5 November 2007 will be released.

As regards the safety of the Nimrod in the light of the fuel leak on XV235, it is important to note that we have stopped Air to Air Refuelling and have also removed potential sources of ignition by ceasing the use of very hot air systems in flight.

In addition we have introduced enhanced aircraft maintenance and inspection of aircraft systems. With all of these measures in place, we are satisfied that, as it is today, the Nimrod is safe to fly.

Qinetiq: Nimrod Ageing Aircraft Audit Immediate Fault Reports Summary

The Nimrod Ageing Aircraft Systems Audit has now been completed.

These final QinetiQ reports do not identify any issues that impact on the current airworthiness of the aircraft and the findings of the reports do not alter previous assessments that the Nimrod aircraft is safe to fly.

The fourth document is the MOD response to recommendations made by QinetiQ in the RTI/Nimrod/212B - Enhanced Systems Integrity Checks report and the Nimrod Ageing Ageing Aircraft Systems Audit Report. The QinetiQ Immediate Fault Report Summary already incorporates the actions taken by MOD, so a separate document is not necessary.
