Workforce development

MLA has an ambitious agenda relating to workforce development. We take it seriously as a fundamental issue facing museums, archives and libraries. We strongly believe that the sector's impact and our ability to realise the ambitious change necessary to provide a truly world-class service to our users depends on the 80,000 plus staff who work in it. Therefore, MLA has developed a national workforce development strategy for use as an action plan to enable museums, libraries and archives to meet the challenge of delivering truly 21st century services.

This document outlines the MLA’s vision for developing the workforce in the museums, libraries and archives sector. It sets out the priority workforce activities funded and supported by MLA over the next three years. These priorities are:

 • Leadership development
 • Widening entry routes
 • Increasing the demographic diversity of the workforce
 • E-skills development

Partners

MLA works with many partners and stakeholders, such as the Sector Skills Councils , both to implement the actions identified within the strategy, and to ensure that initiatives undertaken in the field of workforce development within the sector have a clear link to the overall strategy.

Responsibilities transfer

From 1st October 2011, this site will not be updated, so please treat it as the static archive it is. This is because Arts Council England has now taken over museums and libraries responsibilities. The National Archives has assumed responsibility for strategic leadership of the Archives sector. Arts Council responsibilities will also now include the Renaissance programme, Museum Accreditation, and Library Development, together with cultural property services such as Export Licensing and the Acceptance in Lieu scheme. The National Archives has assumed responsibility for providing strategic leadership to the archives sector and advising government on its development. The MLA is now winding down, with a skeleton staff remaining until May 2012 to complete the management of existing Renaissance contracts, complete outstanding financial and contractual arrangements and prepare for the appointment of a liquidator. This website will remain live until 31st March so that the public still has full access to the material on it – good practice case studies, toolkits, guidance and a range of other publications. Continue reading
