A New Approach to ESOL
The Department for Business, Innovation and Skills (BIS) and the Department of Communities and Local Government (CLG) made available 'A new approach to ESOL' in May 2009. The document responds to the ESOL consultation in 2008 to enable ESOL provision to have a greater focus on social inclusion and community cohesion. Further information on the consultation can be found at: http://www.dius.gov.uk/esol
The key elements of the new approach are for local authorities, leading other local strategic partners, to identify currently excluded groups for ESOL provision, consider what provision is currently on offer and agree actions to support the identified priorities. Partners and providers will then need to modify their services and provision accordingly.
Implementation
‘Implementing the New Approach to ESOL’ was published on Thursday 3 September 2009. This captures the experiences and lessons learnt from 31 pathfinder local authorities that have been fast-tracking the new approach since June 2009. It aims to support implementation across all local authorities from September 2009, setting out key information on the process, who does what and the timeline.
