A History Book of Communications

Communication was revolutionized with the invention of the printing press. With the printing press it became possible to reproduce information and knowledge on an unprecedented scale. Multiple copies of books could be made and ideas could be disseminated rapidly.

Written texts were copied down by hand prior to the invention of the press. This meant that multiplying books was an effort and time intensive task. With the press came an avalanche of written material.

The age of paper, however, seems to be over. The future of the book is uncertain as most knowledge and information is now accessible digitally, on the internet. (more...)

Will Reading Return?

Due to the global recession, most forms of media fell in 2009. In this article we are going to discuss book sales. According to a recent report, book sales were off by 1.8 percent in 2009. This is a slight improvement from the 2.6 percent drop in 2008.

Years ago, books were considered recession-proof, since they were an affordable form of entertainment. But that is not the case anymore. Of course, this has more to do with the competition than it does with the actual cost of books, which is not much more than it has ever been, when adjusted for inflation in San Pedro.

However, there are other forms of entertainment that are comparably cheap, often free. We are speaking of course about the internet. As you may know, people can download games, movies and music online for a nominal fee. By comparison, books are quite expensive. Fortunately, there is good news to report. (more...)

The Problems with Fake Reviews for Books

Before buying a book a lot of people will tend to read a review on it. While these can be really helpful if they are written honestly, fake reviews can do a lot of damage.

Publishers all want to make sure that the books they publish get the best reception and do as well as possible. One way for this to happen is for a book to get a lot of favourable reviews from people who have read them.

Unfortunately not all reviews are fair and some people will publish fake reviews on books so that a particular book will not do very well or vice versa. One problem with such reviews is that there is not always very much a publisher can do to stop reviews which are fake from being published. (more...)

The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People Reviewed by Roz Bennetts

Written by Stephen R. Covey this book was first published over twenty years ago and while reading it may not be a revelatory moment for you it does contain sage advice about business ethics (ethics in general in fact) and other ideals that you may already have incorporated into your life/work. It is presented well and if nothing else serves as a very good reminder of what makes people successful and why. I think the people who will gain most value from reading this book will be those who are in customer facing and executive roles though the data is broad enough to apply to life in general.

The main areas that the book covers are being proactive, planning ahead, visualising the effects of your actions, prioritising based on real importance and urgency (the two may not be related), adopting a win/win mentality and the virtue of seeking first to understand, and only then to be understood (which for me was the most valuable part of the book in terms of my sales career). Definitely worth adding to your reading list.
