We are responsible for the law and policy on cremation. We appoint crematorium medical referees and we also provide guidance on the cremation legislation.
The main legislation is the Cremation Act 1902 and regulations made under the Act. New regulations, the Cremation Regulations 2008, came into force on 1 January 2009.
