Polling card

The Prime Minister has agreed that those areas of political reform for which the Deputy Prime Minister will have direct responsibility should transfer from the Ministry of Justice to the Cabinet Office.

This includes responsibility for constitutional matters, devolution and electoral reform. Responsibility for the Electoral Commission, IPSA, and the Boundary Commissions has also transferred to the Cabinet Office.

The content below relates to the Ministry of Justices former responsibilities for this area.

Guidance for electoral registration officers on standards for the formatting of names, dates of birth and addresses in electoral registers.

A direction was in April 2008 requiring electoral registration officers to take steps to ensure that electors' details contained within electoral registers are stored to a consistent standard.

It set standards for the formatting of names, dates of birth and addresses in electoral registers. Electoral registration officers have to comply with the standards by 1 December 2009.

The guidance provides information on:

  • understanding the standards
  • managing the matching process
  • dealing with technical issues
  • managing suppliers
  • claiming funding.

The guidance was developed with help from the Association of Electoral Administrators, electoral registration officers and technical experts.

Additional guidance has been issued and we will continue to circulate updates as issues are raised. If you have any queries about the guidance or the standards please email us.
