Several magistrates in 2004 reported to court officials racist comments made by fellow magistrates. The documents illustrate how seriously such remarks were taken and the Department's efforts to formally investigate the matter and to identify those responsible acknowledging that it was impossible to do so unless those magistrates who drew attention to the matter disclosed the names of their colleagues.
