Presentations available from 2nd Annual ETSI TC ITS Workshop

Date: 1/3/2010

The 2nd annual ETSI TC ITS (European Telecommunications Standards Institute, Technical Committee for ITS) Workshop, was held in the South of France on 10-12 February 2010. The event provided a thorough overview of ITS related standards published so far, as well as including workshop and panel discussions on ongoing standardisation activities in ETSI TC ITS. Presentations were given by representatives of ETSI, ERTICO, the European Commission, various European research projects, the private sector and universities.
In particular there was a focus on the international standardisation activities and deployment of co-operative systems. This included discussing:
-
Infrastructure-based networks and applications
-
Business models, with specific reference to the corresponding standardisation
-
Experiences from research projects and field operational tests, within a global perspective
-
How the current expertise in co-operative systems standardisation could be used for other ITS domains, such as train management systems, eCustoms, eFreight and the inclusion of pedestrians.
A summary from the ETSI website is given below for each of the six sessions.
Session 1: Keynotes and Panel Discussion on International Standardisation for ITS
Presentations: docbox.etsi.org/.../1_OPENINGandKEYNOTE/
The opening and keynote speeches included the following presentations:
-
International standardisation for ITS in ETSI (ETSI TC ITS)
-
Co-operative mobility and the importance of harmonised international standards (European Commission)
-
International harmonisation of co-operative systems standards (US Department of Transportation, ITS Joint Program Office)
-
ITS radio systems in Japan (Ministry of Internal Affairs and Communications Japan)
-
Current activities towards deployment of co-operative mobility services (ERTICO)
-
Regulatory framework for ITS deployment in the European Union (European Commission DG TREN).
Session 2: The European Commission Mandate on ITS
Presentations: docbox.etsi.org/.../2_ECMANDATE/
The European Commission issued a mandate to the European Standards Organisations (CEN, CENELEC, ETSI) on the development of standards for co-operative ITS in October 2009 (see November 2009 Newsletter for further information). The panellists presented the objectives of this mandate and afterwards discussed the joint action plan which is envisaged to address the mandate. This was raised in this presentation: CEN-ISOandETSICooperation.pdf#page=22.
Session 3: So Far So Next - Panel Discussion on ETSI TC ITS Working Groups Standardisation Activities
Presentations: docbox.etsi.org/.../3_TCITS_WORKINGGROUPS/
Representatives of the ETSI TC ITS working groups provided a detailed status report on what has been standardised so far and which standardisation activities are to start in the near future.
Session 4: Global Standardisation and Research on ITS
A detailed status report on international standardisation activities was given. A particular focus was on how the speakers intended to contribute to international cooperation and the provision of a set of comprehensive and complementary standards. This session also aimed to identify how the results of global research projects on co-operative systems could be synchronised and contribute to standardisation.
Session 5: Deployment of Co-operative Systems
Presentations: docbox.etsi.org/../5DEPLOYMENTOFCOOPERATIVESYSTEMS
This session discussed the need for car makers, network operators, road operators and service providers to come together, in order to discuss how standardisation of applications and services will ease the deployment of co-operative systems. The contribution of mobile operators with ubiquitous coverage to bridge the gap between vehicles and infrastructure was also discussed.
Session 6: Co-operative Systems, One Step Beyond
Presentations: docbox.etsi.org/.../6COOPERATIVESYSTEMS/
Much experience has been generated on co-operative systems, and a set of related standards is to be published and deployed soon. This session discussed whether other ITS-related areas could benefit from this experience:
-
Can next generation train management systems be derived from technologies used for co-operative systems?
-
Can mobile phones be equipped in a way to make pedestrians visible to vehicles?
-
Are services such as real-time car-sharing just a vision or are they feasible?
