Removal of enhanced mode from standard for TMC coding protocol

Date: 1/6/2009

Source: www.tisa.org/

The standard for the coding protocol for Traffic Message Channel (TMC) is currently under review, and as part of the review the ‘enhanced mode’ is to be withdrawn.

The standard under review is CEN ISO 14819-1, “TTI messages via traffic message coding -- Part 1: Coding protocol for Radio Data System -- Traffic Message Channel (RDS-TMC) using ALERT-C”. When it was originally drafted and published, provision was made for defining the encoding and broadcasting either in a 'normal mode' or in an 'enhanced mode', also known as 'spinning wheel' mode. In a survey, no TMC devices or service providers used this enhanced mode. As a result, it is to be removed at the next revision.

The Traveller Information Services Association has requested:

“Any organisations depending on the use of this enhanced mode that have not yet signalled this use to TISA or CEN are urged to do so immediately, via the TISA Executive Office.”

The standard is due to be drafted by Quarter 2 of 2009.

ITS Radar International will continue to monitor developments in TMC
