This map shows the rate of insolvencies in each local authority area in England & Wales in each year 2000 to 2009.

  • The rates shown are per 10,000 adult population for each of bankruptcies, individual voluntary arrangements (IVAs) and for total individual insolvency.

  • The rate of bankruptcies increased from 5.3 per 10,000 adults in 2000 to 17.3 in 2009.

  • The rate of IVAs increased from 2.0 per 10,000 adults in 2000 to 11.0 in 2009.

  • The rate of total individual insolvencies increased from 7.2 per 10,000 adults in 2000 to 31.1 in 2009.

  • The rate of bankruptcies increased by 1.5 per 10,000 adults from 15.8 in 2008 to 17.3 in 2009.

  • The rate of IVAs increased by 1.9 per 10,000 adults from 9.1 in 2008 to 11.0 in 2009.

  • The rate of total individual insolvencies increased by 6.2 per 10,000 adults from 24.9 in 2008 to 31.1 in 2009. This increase is thought to be partially due to the introduction of debt relief orders (DROs) in April 2009.

  • The rate of DROs is not shown on this map, as there is currently only nine months of data available.

The data shown on this map can be found in the tables on the following page:
