Annual Reports: HMP Downview - 2003
Until August 2001 HMP Downview was a Category C training prison in Surrey holding some 340 male prisoners. There was one unit for Category D prisoners, many of whom undertook community work outside the prison throughout the week. An important part of Downview�s work was the treatment and prevention of addiction: every prisoner accepted voluntary drug testing at regular intervals in addition to the national mandatory scheme. The charity RAPt (Rehabilitation for Addicted Prisoners Trust) ran courses within the prison. These courses were pioneered at Downview, before spreading to other parts of the prison estate, and were effective and successful: Downview became well known for this valuable work.
