Annual Reports: HMP Chelmsford - 2003

Built in 1828, four blocks and the Healthcare are still original Georgian buildings. Two new blocks and a purpose built sports facility were added in 1996. There is an unused football pitch within the prison perimeter but there is otherwise little room to expand in the urban setting.The prison is delegated Cat C Local/Trainer and Young Offender Institution. As such, it houses a mixture of remand, unsentenced and short sentenced adults and young prisoners and still an inappropriate number of lifers.
