- The 3-month vacancy rates for the main staff groups fell in March 2006 compared with the previous year.
- Consultants: 3-month vacancy rate of 1.9 per cent in March 2006, a decrease from 3.3 per cent in March 2005.
- Qualified nurses: 3-month vacancy rate of 0.9 per cent in March 2006, a decrease from 1.9 per cent in March 2005.
- Qualified Allied Health professionals: 3-month vacancy rate of 1.6 per cent in March 2006, a decrease from 3.4 per cent in March 2005.
- Qualified Healthcare Scientists: 3-month vacancy rate of 1.5 per cent in March 2006, a decrease from 2.1 per cent in March 2005.
- Other qualified scientific, therapeutic and technical staff: 3-month vacancy rate of 1.7 per cent in March 2006, a decrease from 2.3 per cent in March 2005.

All NHS Trusts in England were included in the survey, which asked for vacancies that trusts had been actively trying to fill which had lasted for three months or more as at 31 March.
Results are presented as three month vacancy rates. These are three month vacancies expressed as a percentage of staff in post plus three month vacancies. The staff-in-post figures are from the non-medical and medical and dental workforce censuses.
