The current risk from terrorism

The current risk from terrorism

The Home Office, the Security Service (MI5), the Police and other agencies are constantly engaged in keeping the UK safe from the threat of terrorism.

Members of the public should always remain alert to the danger of terrorism and report any suspicious activity to the police on 999 or the anti-terrorist hotline: 0800 789 321. If your information does not relate to an imminent threat, you can also contact the Security Service.

Current threat level

The current threat level is assessed as SEVERE (GENERAL) - this indicates a continuing high level of threat to the UK.

We have recently announced a new system of threat levels, these will be put in place on 1 August 2006.

The threat to the UK from international terrorism

The Security service (MI5) works with the Joint Terrorism Analysis centre (JTAC) to assess the threat to the UK.

They release a summary of the current threat to the UK from international terrorism, and background information on the Security Service website.

For information on the threats abroad, travellers should consult the Foreign & Commonwealth Office website for country-specific advice.
