Cautions, penalty notices and other alternatives

Not all offences must be handled by the courts. Police have a range of alternatives they can use to address low-level crimes.

You can now find information on being stopped or arrested by the policeĀ on the Directgov website.

Subjects covered there include:

  • police warnings for minor crimes
  • your rights at a police station after being arrested
  • what happens if you're charged with a crime
