Compensation
Criminal Injuries Compensation Scheme
The Criminal Injuries Compensation Scheme provides
payments to blameless victims of crimes of violence and
those injured in trying to apprehend criminals or
prevent crime. The Scheme operates in England, Scotland
and Wales. Anyone sustaining injury there is eligible to
apply. There is a separate scheme for Northern Ireland.
The Scheme is administered by the Criminal Injuries
Compensation Authority (CICA) and the complementary,
independent appellate body, the Criminal Injuries
Compensation Appeals Panel (CICAP). Further information
about the Scheme, together with details of how to make
an application, can be found at www.cica.gov.uk.
Court Compensation
Criminal courts in England and Wales are required to
consider ordering an offender to pay compensation to
their victim(s) in any case where personal injury, loss
or damage has resulted from the offence. The courts are
also required to give reasons where they do not make a
compensation order in such cases.
A compensation order is a sentence of the court (like
a fine). It may not necessarily provide full recompense,
but does help to bring home to the offender the impact
of his crime on the victim.
