Implementation

Inter-Departmental Group on Sexual Offending

In 2003 the Home Secretary established the Inter-Departmental Ministerial Group on Sexual Offending. Part of the role of this group will be to ensure the effective and timely implementation of the Act and to monitor the impact of the Act’s provisions following implementation.

The purpose of the group is far broader than implementing the legislation, however, and is focussed on promoting and co-ordinating a wide range of cross-government action to tackle sexual offending, and provide appropriate support for the victims of sexual crimes. Much is already happening, but the group will be able to co-ordinate the action more strategically and deal with issues of common concern to departments.

The group will also have scope to commission and oversee work on genuinely cross-cutting issues.

Where there is work already taking place (such as through the Task Force on Child Protection on the Internet or the Inter-departmental working group on young people who sexually abuse) the group will not duplicate, but will be kept informed to maintain the full picture of ongoing work.

Baroness Scotland will chair the group and the deputy chair will be Paul Goggins, both of the Home Office.
