HMI Probation conducts a national inspection on a particular theme or issue three times per year. Ten probation services are selected to provide a representative sample and are visited for a detailed examination of their work in relation to the theme. A national report is published which details and compares the findings from all the areas visited. Recommendations are made for improvements. All probation areas, not just those involved in the fieldwork, are expected to act on the findings and implement the recommendations.
