Justice & prisons

Probation

Responsibilities for probation services have now moved from the Home Office to the new Ministry of Justice.

Ministry of Justice launched

As of May 2007, responsibility for probation, prisons and preventing re-offending moved from the Home Office to the new Ministry of Justice (new window).

More on the changes to the Home Office.

The Home Office website will be updated over the coming weeks to reflect the changes to its structure and responsibilities.

The National Offender Management Service

The National Offender Management Service (new window) (NOMS) is the organisation putting these changes into practice. It brings together the prison and probation services, to ensure offenders are managed effectively, from the beginning to the end of their sentences.

All of this work is now done under the leadership of the Ministry of Justice (new window).
