The Prison Service The Prison Service
(This link will take you to the Prison Service website.)
The Prison Service keeps prisoners securely in custody, looking after them with humanity and helping them lead law-abiding and useful lives in custody and after their release.
HM Inspectorate of Prisons Her Majesty's Inspectorate of Prisons
An independent inspectorate which reports on conditions for and treatment of those in prison, young offender institutions and immigration detention centres. HMIP is committed to protecting human rights and encouraging service improvement.
Independent Monitoring Boards Independent Monitoring Boards
IMBs perform a vital 'watchdog' role providing independent checks on prisons and immigration removal centres. The 1900 volunteers have an important role in ensuring prisoners and detainees are cared for decently.
The Prisons and Probation Ombudsman The Prisons and Probation Ombudsman
(This link will take you to the PPO website.)
The completely independent PPO investigates complaints from prisoners, ex-prisoners subject to probation supervision, or anyone who has had reports written about them.
National Offender Management Service The National Offender Management Service
The introduction of the National Offender Management Service (NOMS) was announced by the Home Secretary earlier this year. It will bring together the prison and probation services as one service, responsible for joining up offender management, ensuring the public are better protected and reoffending is reduced.
