Public Appointments
Most public appointments made by Ministers are to bodies which
either carry out some of the functions of Government or
provide independent advice or views to Ministers and Government
Departments. Many bodies are classed as "non-departmental
public bodies" (NDPBs). These organisations, often
called "quangos", have a role in the processes
of national Government, but are not part of a Government
department, and operate to a greater or lesser extent
at arm's length from Government Ministers.
There are four types of NDPB and a broad description
of how they operate can be found at Types
of public body. This link will also
lead you to lists of the bodies sponsored by the Home
Office to which Home Office Ministers make appointments,
and from there to details about each body. In most entries
for particular bodies you will find the names of the
Chairman and Board members, the start and finish dates
of their appointments, whether the appointments are
paid or unpaid, and whether the appointment is full
or part time.
If you are interested in being considered for a public
appointment when a vacancy arises but you have not identified
a particular vacancy, you can Register
your interest in a public appointment. The form
is a PDF file which you can print off, complete and
send to us at the address shown on the form. NB
This form should only be used to register an interest
in public appointments to bodies sponsored by
the Home Office. If you are interested in working for
the Home Office itself or one of its executive agencies,
please visit the Home Office Careers
website.
If you want to see what vacancies are currently being
advertised, see the List
of currently advertised vacancies. Each advertisement
has an application form in a PDF file attached which
can be printed off, completed and sent to the address
shown on the form.
The particular skills needed for the advertised vacancies
will be shown in the advertisements. As a general indication,
a wide range of skills will be required including financial
and business expertise, good analytical thinking and
judgement, clear oral expression, a demonstrated interest
in the area concerned. We would like to hear from people
with a proven track record of achievement but we are
also interested in people who believe they have the
potential to make a strong contribution in a public
appointment.
For a summary of public appointments opportunities
which are likely to arise in 2002-2003, see
forthcoming vacancies. The summary does not
include appointments that are filled by nominating bodies
under a statutory requirement, or those which are past
the closing date for applications. However, it
may include some appointments that will be filled by
means of re-appointment of existing members. Please
contact us if you would like to know more about a specific
appointment. In doing so, it is worth bearing
in mind that sponsor units often start the recruitment
process up to six months (and in some instances, even
earlier) in advance of the expected starting date.
It is important therefore to contact us at the earliest
opportunity.
