Mental Health Unit
The Mental Health Unit's mission is to protect the
public from further offending by dangerous mentally
disordered offenders and severely personality disordered
people.
The Unit carries out the Home Secretary's functions
under mental health legislation for the management of
patients within the hospital system and on conditional
discharge in the community who are subject to a restriction
order issued by a court.
The Unit advises Ministers in developing and presenting
Government policies in the treatment of mentally disordered
offenders, including taking forward work on the Government's
proposals for dangerous people with severe personality
problems.
The Unit's work includes the application of the Home
Secretary's statutory powers to individual patients
and responsibilities for the development and implementation
of policy across the broad range of issues concerning
the way in which people with mental health problems
are dealt with by the criminal justice system.
