The Drug Strategy "Tackling Drugs to Build
a Better Britain" was introduced in 1998. Following
a review in 2002 it was built on and adapted with the
launch of an Updated Strategy.
The Updated strategy concentrates on the most
dangerous drugs, the most damaged communities and the
individuals whose addictions are the most harmful.
Targets focus on four areas:
- Young
People - Preventing young people from using drugs
and developing drug problems;
- Reducing
Supply - Reducing the prevalence of illegal drugs
on the streets;
- Communities
- Reducing drug related crime; and
- Treatment
- Reducing the number of those with existing drug
problems through the provision of effective treatment
and harm minimisation measures.
The problems of drug misuse are complex and require
co-ordinated delivery of services involving education,
intelligence and enforcement, social and economic policy,
and health. Tackling drugs requires effective joint
working between Government Departments and agencies
at a national and local level.
