Drugs Branch Licensing and Inspectorate
The Drugs Branch is the UK's competent authority for
the purposes of the United Nations Conventions on controlled
drugs. Any companies intending to possess, supply, produce
or manufacture controlled drugs will need to apply to
the Drugs Branch for the appropriate licence.

Companies - Application Form for Controlled Drug Licence
This list of controlled drugs enables companies to identify their licence requirements:
Upon receipt the form is checked and passed onto the
Home Office Inspector, who will arrange to visit the
company.
The fee for a licence is calculated per drug per year.
Licences are renewed annually.

Doctors - Application form for Doctors Licence
Any doctors working as part of a drug dependency unit
or community drug team who treat 10 addicts or more
per week are eligible for a handwriting exemption licence.
This allows Doctors to computer generate scripts for
Schedule 2 and 3 drugs (excluding temazepam, phenobarbitone
and phenobarbitone sodium) although they should still
be signed and dated in ink.
Application for an exemption from writing controlled
drug prescriptions by hand:
All sites that the Doctor is prescribing controlled
drugs from should be included in the application.
The same provision applies to doctors who are issuing
prescriptions for dipipanone (dicanol), diamorphine
or cocaine. A separate licence is required for each
substance.
