Revised code of practice for examining officers under the Terrorism Act 2000
The Home Office aims to strengthen security of our borders in conjunction with key departments and agencies to reduce the vulnerabilities from terrorism, and ensure the safety and security of UK ports through effective policing.
We also work to ensure that arrangements are in place for the protective security of the airports, maritime ports and international rail termini taking particular account of the policing contribution.
The code of practice is used by examining officers who exercise the use of Schedule 7 of the Terrorism Act 2000 powers at ports.
In the context of Schedule 7, an examining officer is defined as:
- a constable
- an immigration officer
- a customs officer who is designated for the purpose of the schedule by the Secretary of State and the Commissioners of Custom & Excise
The Code has been re-drafted in consultation with practitioners and we would like comments from any organisations, groups or individuals who may have an interest in this matter.
The closing date for responses to this consultation is 24 August 2007.
