Proposed Changes to the Misuse of Drugs Legislation

This was a joint Home Office/Department of Health public consultation informing parties that the Government intended to make changes to the Misuse of Drugs Regulations. A summary of the responses recieved to this consultation is below.

The Fourth Report of the Shipman Inquiry made a number of recommendations to improve the management of Controlled Drugs. The Government's response in the 'Safer Management of Controlled Drugs' included a commitment to consult on a series of amendments to the Misuse of Drugs Regulations 2001 designed to strengthen the current systems for managing controlled drugs. This consultation is concerned with implementing changes proposed in the Government response on prescribing of controlled drugs and strengthening the audit trail. Many of the proposed changes have already been considered in detail by the sub-committee of the Advisory Council on the Misuse of Drugs (ACMD), established to look at the issues raised by the Inquiry and its likely implications for the Misuse of Drugs legislation. These measures have been thoroughly considered and are likely to be welcomed by interested parties.

This consulation is now closed.
