Inside Organised Crime

AGIS Funding Programme

AGIS provides an opportunity for UK organisations to seek to benefit from EU funding in order to develop research programmes and share operational expertise with other European partners.

Encryption

We have established a National Technical Assistance Centre (NTAC) which, once fully operational, will provide the capability to produce plain-text/images/audio from lawfully intercepted communications and lawfully seized computer media that are encrypted. The services offered by NTAC will continue to support the needs of law enforcement for a continuing flow of intelligence and evidence.

European Union Issues

New proposals from the European Commission that update cross-border crime laws.

Extradition

An outline of the main stages and procedures involved in extradition - the return of persons accused or convicted of serious offences from the UK to other jurisdictions, or vice versa.

Proceeds of Crime

The first new provisions to be implemented under the Proceeds of Crime Act include tough new powers for police and customs officers to investigate and seize the money that criminals make from, and intend to use, in crime.

Regulation of Investigatory Powers Act (RIPA)

RIPA provides for - and regulates the use of - a range of investigative powers, by a variety of public authorities. In particular, it takes account of technological change, such as the growth of the Internet, with powers that pertain to the interception of communications, the use of covert surveillance and the investigation of electronic data protected by encryption, while also providing for independent judicial oversight of its powers.
