Extradition Bill
Main Provisions of the Bill
"No one should be able to escape justice
simply by crossing a national border."
The Extradition Bill proposes radical reform to the
UK's extradition procedures. It aims to make
extradition faster, fairer and more workable by
streamlining the system whilst retaining vital
safeguards for individuals.
The Bill makes provision for a new extradition
structure, the main proposals of which are:
A 2-category framework covering all of our
extradition partners.
Introduction of fast track extradition arrangements
(category one) which will include all EU member states
and enable us to give effect to the new European arrest
warrant (EAW).
A simplified extradition procedure for all our other
partners (category two) which will reduce duplication
and complexity while safeguarding fugitives' rights.
A simplification of the rules governing the
authentication of foreign documents.
A simplified single avenue of appeal against
extradition for all cases.
For the countries with whom we have regular
extradition traffic, the Bill will make extradition
simpler and quicker in the interests of firmer and
fairer justice.
The principle of extradition will remain the same -
criminals who flee should face justice in the country
where they committed their crimes.
