Expansion of the SARC Network

PDF Some of the documents below are in Adobe PDF format. To view them, you may first need to download a free copy of the Adobe Acrobat reader.

This section provides some useful information for practitioners in the health services, police and those in the voluntary sector who may wish to establish a SARC in their area.

Working in Partnership

The success of SARCs to date has been largely dependent on the strength of partnerships between the police and health services, together with local voluntary organisations. The Home Office and the Department of Health are working with Association of Chief Police Officers and the National SARCs Steering Group to support and expand the network of SARCs in England and Wales.

Funding for SARCs

In April this year the Home Secretary announced that £4 million derived from the recovered proceeds of crime would be made available to develop services for victims of sexual assault. A substantial proportion of this will be used to support and increase the number of Sexual Assault Referral Centres.

This year funding to help new SARCs with start up costs is being allocated on a targeted basis. Invitations for applications have been sent to Police and Primary Care Trusts in areas which already have advanced plans for a SARC. Applications will be evaluated according to the following criteria:

We would like to work with any other areas interested in developing plans for a SARC so that they may be in a position to apply for funding in 2005/6. Please email us for advice or further information.
