Human Rights

The decision to introduce a Human Rights Act was a key part of the Government's programme of change after the 1997 election.

As a result the Home Office created a Human Rights Unit responsible for providing advice to the general public and other Government departments on the Act.

Responsibility for giving general advice on the Human Rights Act moved from the Home Office to the Department for Constitutional Affairs in 2001.
