| Devolution
The United Kingdom Parliament recognised
that people wanted more democratic say over their part
of the UK and passed in 1998 the Scotland Act, the Government
of Wales Act, and the Northern Ireland Act.
Each Act created the Scottish Parliament, the National
Assembly for Wales, the Northern Ireland Assembly and
the Northern Ireland Human Rights Commission. Each devolved
administration was also provided with an administrative
civil service.
In May 2002, 'Your
Region, Your Choice', a White Paper was published
to consult the people of England on possible changes
to English regional and local government.
The Home Office's Constitutional Unit
that had dealt with Devolution moved to the Lord Chancellor's
Department in 2001.
The Devolution Co-ordination Team was therefore established
on the 17 September 2001 to deal with Devolution work
for the Home Office.
A major part of this work is ensuring good working
relationships exist between the Home Office and the
Scottish, Wales and Northern Ireland civil services
and each of their UK Parliament Secretary of States'
Offices while making sure they work well with the Home
Office.
