Active Communities in the Regions

There are nine Government Offices (GOs) of the Regions set up in 1994. GOs are at the heart of delivering Government policies and programmes on behalf of the following ten departments:


The Regional Co-ordination Unit (RCU),is an inter-departmental unit located in the Office of the Deputy Prime Minister that co-ordinates the work of the GOs.
Together the Government Offices (GOs) and RCU aim to:

  • cut through bureaucracy and add value to delivery through shared experience and best practice;
  • bring together key stakeholders and local partners; and
  • provide a high quality service by combining skills in the GOs at the local level with the co-ordination role of the RCU in influencing policy design and implementation in Whitehall.

The Government Offices are based in the 9 English regions as follows:
