Your Freedom

The coalition government is committed to creating a more open and less intrusive society.

The Your Freedom website (new window) was set up to give people in the UK the opportunity to put forward their ideas on how we can strengthen civil liberties, get rid of unnecessary laws and cut regulation.

This feedback will help the government to shape their future policies.

Your response

Over the last few months, the website had:

  • 46,000 people visiting
  • 14,000 ideas

The site stopped taking ideas and comments on 10 September, as Your Freedom moves into its next stage. The government will now look at all of the submitted ideas and decide which ones to take forward.

What they'll do with your ideas

The government is committed to looking at looking at all of the suggestions submitted.

The ideas, comments and ratings will influence the decisions the government makes and some may end up in bills put before parliament, like the Freedom Bill, which will be introduced later this year.

You can read more about what the government will do with your feedback on the Your Freedom website (new window).

How they will respond to you

All ideas and comments will be pulled together by discussion theme, and the most relevant government department for each theme will respond. You can read more about how they plan to respond on the Your Freedom website (new window).

Civil liberties

Civil liberties are the basic rights and freedoms that protect us as individuals. They prevent the state from abusing power, or intruding in citizens' lives unnecessarily. Legislation can help keep people safe, but excess legislation can erode civil liberties. Home Office policy often touches on the area of civil liberties.
