Sustainable development at the Home Office

Information about the Home Office's commitment to sustainable development.

The government launched its sustainable development strategy - Securing the future (new window) - in 2005. That strategy committed it to leading by example.

Committed to sustainability

This commitment was reinforced in June 2006 when the document Sustainable operations on the government estate (new window) was published. It included mandatory sustainability targets for all government departments and agencies.

As the government's independent advisor and watchdog on the issue, the Sustainable Development Commission (new window) is responsible for reporting on how departments are doing, and it does so in its annual sustainable development in government report (new window).

The government is also committed to a sustainable procurement agenda which will affect activity on the civil estate.

The sustainable procurement action plan (new window) focuses on this issue. It explains how the UK intends to become one of the leaders of sustainable procurement in Europe by 2009.
