About us
Our service to you
As well as publishing information on our goals and strategies, we also publish reports on how we are meeting our targets.
Public opinion polling
We carry out quarterly opinion polling research to make sure that we understand and measure public priorities, concerns and satisfaction with the vital services we offer. Along with other research and evidence, opinion polling helps us develop our corporate strategy, policies and communications; it helps us to make sure front line services are accountable, responsive and effective.
Please note, the polling is not part of the Home Office's research, or national statistics. It also does not represent a statement of Home Office policy.
Follow the links below to see all results from the Home Office crime and immigration tracker from November 2006, when this research began. For results of specific UKBA opinion polling, please visit the UK Border Agency website (new window).
The autumn performance reports
We publish an autumn performance report every year describing how well we are meeting the targets set for us in our public service agreement.
Capability review
Launched in 2005, the capability review programme (new window) is the first to fully assess the organisational capabilities of individual departments and to publish those results.
The ultimate goal of the programme (which is overseen by the Cabinet Office) is to improve the government’s ability to meet its current and future goals.
In response to weaknesses identified in its reviews, each department must draw up and follow an action plan to ensure that it can meet the goals set out for it, and strengthen any areas they need bolstering.
Documents related to this review include:
Public service agreement
The public service agreement (PSA) (new window) sets the priorities for this department over each spending review period.
The targets contained in the PSA express the department's priorities in objective terms designed to make its progress transparent, and allowing it to be monitored.
The Home Secretary will lead on the following PSAs:
-
making communities safer
-
reducing the risk to the UK and its interests overseas from international terrorism
-
reducing the harm caused by drugs and alcohol
-
ensuring controlled, fair migration that protects the public and contributes to economic growth
-
delivering a more effective, transparent and responsive criminal justice system for victims and the public (led jointly with the Attorney General and the Secretary of State for Justice)

The Anderson review - guidance for businesses
The government’s 2008 'Enterprise strategy' asked Sarah Anderson to conduct an independent review into how the government can best provide regulatory guidance to businesses. The good guidance guide (new window), published on 28 January 2009, discussed the need for government to give businesses greater certainty over finding, following and interpreting guidance. The report focused on:
-
providing clearer guidance
- making guidance more accessible
- achieving consistent guidance across government
- changing the culture of the relationship between regulators and businesses
Under the review, we committed to publishing a list of most frequently used guidance specifically for businesses, to help them interpret the regulations.
