Alan Campbell - Parliamentary Under-Secretary of State

Alan Campbell is the Parliamentary Under-Secretary of State responsible for crime reduction.

Alan Campbell was most recently a government whip, as Lord Commissioner of Her Majesty's Treasury.

Prior to that he was parliamentary private secretary to Cabinet Office Minister Lord Macdonald of Tradeston. He was also a member of the joint committee on the draft charities bill during the 2004-05 parliamentary session.

From 1997 until 2001 Alan Campbell was a member of the Public Accounts Select Committee. He has also held the posts of secretary and treasurer of the Northern Group of Labour MPs.

He has been MP for Tynemouth Constituency since May 1997.

Before entering Parliament, Mr Campbell worked as a teacher. He taught at Whitley Bay High School and at Hirst High School in Ashington.

He was born in Consett and went to Blackfyne Secondary School before attending the University of Lancaster where he gained a degree in politics.  He qualified as a teacher at the University of Leeds before gaining a postgraduate degree in History at Newcastle Polytechnic.
