We provide information that helps Ministers and policy makers take evidence-based decisions, and also help the police, probation service, the courts, immigration officials and fire-fighters to do their jobs.

The Research Development and Statistics Directorate (RDS) is an integral part of the Home Office. We provide information that helps Ministers and policy makers take evidence-based decisions, and also help the police, probation service, the courts, immigration officials and fire-fighters to do their jobs as effectively as possible.

We do so both by maintaining the various statistical series published by the Home Office and by carrying out research ourselves or commissioning others to do so.

Within RDS there are teams of skilled specialist staff such as statisticians, researchers, economists and scientists all working together with skilled administrators to inform and advise Parliament and the public as well as our Home Office colleagues.
