29 June 2007

Two new Home Office ministers announced.

Two new Home Office ministers were announced today.

Sir Alan West

Sir Alan West, the former first Sea Lord, has been named as the new Home Office minister for security, counter-terrorism and police.

Sir Alan has had a distinguished naval and governmental career stretching back decades.

Awarded the distinguished service cross for his work commanding the frigate HMS Ardent in the Falkland Islands conflict, he later held several naval appointments and played prominent roles in the re-organisation of the Ministry of Defence.

He was appointed First Sealord and Chief of the Naval Staff in September 2002, and he was made a knight grand cross, Order of the Bath, in 2004, and served as first sea lord until 2006, when he became chancellor of Southampton Solent University.

Meg Hillier

Meg Hillier, MP for Hackney South and Shoreditch, was also named Home Office minister today.

Mrs Hillier began her political career in 2000 when she was elected to the London Assembly to represent Hackney, Islington and Waltham Forest. She stood down at the June 2004 election after her selection as a parliamentary candidate.

A former journalist, she has worked in or campaigned on housing issues for a decade and chaired the London Assembly’s inquiry into housing for key workers in 2000.

Transport is another of her key priorities – she has championed a number of transport causes while representing Hackney.
